bd Wrestlers are Prepared and Ready to Carry the Wrench to Districts

Our wrestlers have been preparing all year for the post season. Tough competition was found in the states of Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania via a number of tough duals and tournaments that Coach Moore strategically scheduled to prepare them for the rigors of post season competition.

The Evergreen District Tournament will be held at Warren County High School in Front Royal on Saturday. By now most should know that the Evergreen District is comprised of five teams: BDHS, Fauquier HS, Liberty HS, Kettle Run HS, and Warren County HS. The district tournament is a bracketed event. Seeding/ranking was established at the District Duals. To figure the seed you have only to look at individual results from District Duals.  For instance:  At 135 Seth Henson defeated the wrestlers from Kettle Run, Liberty, Warren County, and Fauquier … but in the Fauquier dual he wrestled 140 not 135. Since he did not wrestle Fauquier's 135 and the Fauquier 135 won all his matches Seth will be seeded second.

Coach Moore is attending the district seeding meeting this evening. The seeding process is relatively straight forward given that all the wrestlers in the weight class wrestled each other at district duals. It gets more complex if wrestlers change weight classes after district duals, thus the need for the meeting. In these cases the coaches look for head to head results, and or the outcome of matches against a common opponent in order to establish the seeds for districts. The outcome of the District tournament establishes the seeding for Regionals, and the outcome of Regionals establishes the seeding going into states.

The Evergreen District tournament is the first of two steps to get to wrestle at the State tournament in Salem/Roanoke. So come out and cheer the guys on as they take that first post season step toward Salem.

bd Wrestles with the Wrench and Earns Virginia Top 20 Ranking in January 2011

So, how did we get there?

January opened with our annual pilgrimage to Easton HS in Pennsylvania for the prestigious Easton Duals.  Improving on last year's performance the team went 2 and 2 in dual competition with a 40 - 16 win over Pennsylvania's Palisades HS and a 43 - 30 win over Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountain West team.  We dropped a match 18 - 52 to Delaware's Caesar Rodney HS (one of the top 20 teams in the country) and we dropped a match 21 – 42 to New Jersey's Warren Hills HS.

Our next event took us to Kettle Run HS for the Evergreen District Duals.  This dual series is the first step toward establishing district rankings going into the post season.  In the District Duals we won three of four matches by defeating Liberty HS 63 – 10, Kettle Run HS 60 – 8, and Warren County HS 51 – 28, while dropping a match to our nemesis Fauquier HS 18 – 48.

District Duals was followed by a dual match in Haymarket where we defeated AAA Battlefield HS by a score of 55 – 13.  The victory at Battlefield closed out our 2010/2011 dual match schedule.  On the year we finished with a 28 win and 8 loss record against some of the best that Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey had to offer.

Our next event, Christiansburg HS' Big Blue Tournament, was a late addition to the schedule.  At Big Blue the team rallied for 4th place from amongst a field of thirty-three teams.   The team placed five of fourteen wrestlers.   The top finisher of the group was Brandon Thompson placing 2nd at 215, Seth Henson placed 3rd at 135, Zach Roseberry placed 3rd at 189, and Juan Funes placed 7th at 285.

This past weekend we competed at Freedom HS in the Curry Auto Invitational where as a team we placed 3rd of twelve teams.  We medaled wrestlers in ten of the fourteen weight classes.   1st place finishes were turned in by Seth Henson at 135 and Zach Roseberry at 189.  3rd place finishes were turned in by Tyler Fake at 119, Brandon Thompson at 215, and Juan Funes at 285.  4th place finishes were turned in by Brenden Velez at 103, and Justice Jacobs at 125.  5th place finishes were turned in by Tim Nordan at 112, Gabe McGuinness at 140, and Jason Miller at 171.  It is important to note that Tyler Scheatzle at 145 and Dillon Creswell at 152 both qualified for the medal rounds providing valuable team points.

Picture Day Scheduled for Wednesday, 12 January 2011

If you missed the blog on skin issues -- read the blog on picture day then scroll to the bottom and take the time to pull up the blog on skin issues. It is important.

Note that this bd wrestling missive honors the duty bound principle of communicating an idea three times, it is intended.

(1)     Team and individuals pictures will be taken on Wednesday 12 January 2011.  All wrestlers are required to bring their wrestling singlets, team shorts, and t-shirts.  The wrestlers will be given an order packet at practice.  If you want pictures you'll need to fill out the packet, include a check, and make sure that your wrestler has their match gear (official bd team singlets, shorts, and t-shirt), and a check to pay for the order.

(2)    Last year's picture day qualified as an unmitigated disaster.   Coach Moore was not happy as fully half of the team arrived with no gear, no packets, and no checks.  The experience was not pleasant, some actually thought Coach Moore was going to have a stroke – the photographer was so scared his hands trembled as he tried to keep the wreslters in focus.

(3)    Be prepared -- bring your gear, filled out packet, and check on Wednesday, 12 January 2011.

And a fourth for good measure:

(4)    Bring your gear, packets, and checks on Wednesday 12 January.  Arrive with no gear and you'll not be in the team picture.

Let's make sure that this year is a more positive experience for the coaches, parents, and wrestlers.  Please ensure that your wrestler is fully prepared for picture day.

Skin Issues

One month into the season and we are experiencing a few instances in which our coaches have become concerned about a blemish.  If you read the wrestling blogs / forums you may have come across some teams that are forfeiting three to eight weight classes in a dual match – one explanation is that they are experiencing a rash of staph, ring-worm, or another form of outbreak.

bd coaches have idenitified a few cases / blemishes in our room that require the attention / clearance of a physician.  The coaches are talking to the wrestler and they are expecting the wrestler to communicate with their parents i.e., a need to schedule an appointment with their physician.  For the good of the entire team the coaching staff is electing not to let wrestlers with questionable blemishes wrestle (matches and or practice) without clearance from a physician.  Note that neither the school nurse nor the school trainer can diagnose the blemish.  If the coach says a blemish needs to be checked out do not take it personal, they are doing us and the whole team a favor, get it checked out.  The sooner the wrestler is cleared by a physician the sooner they can return to practice and competition.

I've been around wrestling for about twenty years as a youth coach.  I have personal experience with ring-worm (easy fix if caught early, if it gets into the scalp area it is extremely difficult to clear), staph (neosporin does not kill it – prescribed antibiotics are required), foliculitis (prescribed antibiotics required), and MRSA (methicillin resistant staph aeuros – this is a painful ozzing red raised mess - a culture has to be taken, takes three days to cultivate so that a "specific antibiotic" can be prescribed and administered often via IV, may likely require hospitalization), and cellulitis (can be extremely painful and is hot to the touch, another not very friendly skin infection – for me it required two weeks of inactivity and a lengthy course of strong antibiotics).  If you are required to care for any of the above, latex gloves should be used, gloves and bandages should be sealed in a plastic (sandwich bag) for disposal (don't want to inadvertently pass along to the rest of the family when they throw something in the trash).  The potential seriousness of some these conditions has not been overstated.

A file will be sent out via e-mail that contains graphic pictures of various contagious skin conditions.  Many of the conditions look very similar and a layman (parents, coaches, wrestlers) is not qualified to make the diagnosis.  Some of the skin conditions can be life threatening, don't take them lightly.

Talk to your kids.  Ask them if they have any red areas, raised areas, ozzing areas, and or hot spots.  Again, for the health and safety of the entire team our coaches are being very cautious.  So, if coach has asked that a blemish be checked-out then do so as soon as possible.  If it's not an issue they'll be right back on mat.  If it is an issue then it needs to professionally diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

So talk to and look at your kids.

Stay healthy, Steve Henson

bd Wrestling Opens 2010 / 2011 Season With Impressive Finishes in December

bd opened the season with the Andrew Kenney Duals where we went 4 -1.  We then competed at the Opening Day at the Park dual tourney where we placed 2nd going 4 – 1.  The next weekend we hosted the prestigious Dudley Martin Tournament where we competed as individuals in round robin format.  Thankfully the new computer program also made it easy to calculate the dual match-ups where we went 8 – 0.  Note that we won the Dudley in fine style (a first in many years) by mounting a tremendous comeback in the 7th and final round of wrestling.   We next traveled to Heritage HS for a "quad-dual" competition in which we renewed an old rivalry with single "A" Strasburg, we ended the night going 3 – 0.  Unfortunately we were snowed out of the Penn Manor tournament.  For our final competition in the month of December we traveled to the McDonogh Holiday Duals where we tied for second in our pool going 4 – 3 against very stiff competition from Maryland and Pennsylvania.  In our pool three teams tied for 2nd all going 4 – 3.  Point differentials were used for pool placement and this moved us into 5th place (not enough bonus point matches).  In any case, we were matched up across pools against Kellam HS (Va AAA team ranked the 8th strongest team in Va) and defeated them placing 9th of 16 very tough teams.   At McDonogh our wrestlers faced and defeated a number of ranked Maryland and Virginia wrestlers.   (details can be found on facebook)
